It appears that the immigration infrastructure that has been wildly exploited by the nation of India since the creation of the H1B visa in the 1990s is finally beginning to suffer a death of a thousand cuts.
One recent indicator—various Indian-dense communities in America are beginning to see homes owned by people with Indian names go on the market at wildly depressed prices, putting the seller’s underwater on their loans, or even going right into foreclosure. This seems a sign that Indians are beginning to flee their host nation of America and returning home.
The opportunities for home buying for American citizens are, of course, correspondingly improving.
This comes as pressure increases from the Trump administration on the tens of millions of Indian migrants still in America and competing every day with American citizens for every scarce American resource—housing, healthcare, education, employment, food, infrastructure, everything.
Although Trump’s initial $100,000 fee on H1Bs has been stopped (of course) by an unelected, black-robed, tyrannical, federal district trial court judge, the President has responded with an even greater fee using a different legal authority.
Indians in America are finding that their practice of allowing existing visa authorization for presence in the US to expire, and remaining in the country while alternative authorizations for presence are still being worked out, is no longer acceptable, and they are being subject to immediate deportation with no more 60-day “grace period” to find another job or another visa category.
Green card waits for Indian citizens is now approaching 180 YEARS—not a typo—and even when visa renewals are technically on the table, Indians are often being required to return to the US embassy in India for processing, and then finding that appointments are being re-scheduled months or years out or even simply cancelled outright.
That doesn’t keep Indians from fighting like hell to stay in America and out of their home nation of India, of course. And I totally get it. I wouldn’t want to live in India, either.
Increasingly, however, that’s not their call to make, it’s America’s call to make. I wish them all the best in their homeland. In the meantime, I expect Costco visits to become rather less frustrating than they have been in recent years.
