On January 24, 2023, in Duxbury MA, Lindsey Clancy strangled to death her three children: Cora, five years of age, Dawson, three years of age, and Callan, a mere 8 months old. She did so after premeditating their killings, including sending her husband Patrick out of the home on errands to ensure he could not interfere with this mother murdering her small children.
As the father of four, it is almost impossible for me to describe the visceral sense of evil that permeates my soul when I write those three words. A mother murdered her own small children. These helpless children being strangled to death as they gaze horrified into the satanic eyes of the mother murdering them.
The horror.
Clancy does not deny having murdered her children. She claims now that she committed the murders while insane, and asks that she be found not guilty by reason of that insanity.
I’ll confess, I really did not want to cover this story at all. I’m not at all sure I’ll be able to actually take this show to completion. We’ll see.
But this horrific act of multiple filicides does raise some interest facets of the insanity defense, particularly as Massachusetts takes an outlier position on the defense.
Given the huge numbers of women who have also spoken up in defense of, or at least in sympathy with, Lindsey Clancy, this horror also raises interesting social questions about women and society generally.
