Trump's Office of Legal Counsel just handed gun owners a major win — and almost nobody's talking about it yet. In a new opinion dated August 12, 2026, OLC concludes that the federal ban on carrying firearms in post offices doesn't actually apply to law-abiding citizens carrying for self-defense, and raises serious doubts about whether a blanket ban would even survive Second Amendment scrutiny under Bruen and Wolford.
I'm breaking down exactly how OLC gets there: the "lawful purposes" exception buried in 18 U.S.C. § 930(d)(3), the historical argument that post offices were never treated as "sensitive places," and why the Postal Service's own no-guns regulation may now be unenforceable.
But the real story is what this opinion doesn't say — because the reasoning here isn't limited to post offices.
