What looks like a series of unrelated foreign policy moves is actually a single coherent strategy -- and China is the target. In this video, I walk through Trump's push to dominate the Panama Canal, his pressure campaign in Venezuela, and his increasingly assertive posture in the Strait of Hormuz, and I explain why these three moves are pieces of the same puzzle.
Each of these locations is either a critical trade chokepoint for the United States or a critical chokepoint for global trade and energy supply for China. The Panama Canal routes a significant share US-related trade of all sorts, and China was slowly establishing control over the Panama Canal area—until Trump put a hard stop to that and effectively evicted China and its influence in the canal zone.
As for Venezuela, its oil has been a key energy source Beijing has cultivated for years—until Trump invaded, secured the arrest of Maduro, and established US-dominated relations with the remaining government. All part of the Don-roe doctrine!
With respect to the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to the existential threat to the world represented by the risk of a nuclear-armed apocalyptic theocracy, the Strait of Hormuz is also the gateway through which roughly a third of the world's seaborne oil passes, including supplies essential to China's economy.
Control or deny access to the Panama Canal, Venezuela, or the Strait of Hormuz, and you have leverage. Control all three, and you have China's attention.
On top of all this, just yesterday the United States established a defense agreement with Indonesia, which helps the US secure military influence over yet another set of straits essential for China’s access to energy and other supplies critical to maintaining its economy.
